Foods rich in vitamins include vegetable, milk, eggs, fruits etc. Examples of Vitamins are Vitamins A,B,C,D,E, and K. They are required in small quantities and are known to maintain a healthy living. Vitamin D can synthesized by ultraviolet rays.
Types of Vitamins:
Vitamin A (retinol) - Source include green vegetables, Liver, palm oil, milk etc.
Functions: 1. For normal growth. 2. Keeps skin and eye healthy. 3. Helps night vision.
Deficiency: Infection of eyes, nose, throat and skin. Inability to see properly at night.
Vitamin B1 (Thiamin) - Yeast, cowpea, Liver, groundnut.
Functions: Needed for cell respiration, and normal functioning of the heart.
Deficiency: Causes Beriberi.
Vitamin B2 - Riboboflavin. Sources include: Yeasts, nut , eGg, milk,meat green vegetables.
Function: for healthy skin.
Deficiency: Dermatitis. (Skin disease) cracks at the mouth corners.
Vitamin B12. Source: Liver.
Function: for formation of protein, fats and glycogen in the body.
Deficient red blood cells.
Vitamin C - Ascorbic acid. Sources include orange, guava, lemons, tomatoes, fresh pepper, paw paw.
Function: Increases resistance to diseases. Helps in healing wounds.
Deficiency : scurvy.
Vitamin D: Milk, Liver, and egg.
Function: required by babies and young children.
Deficiency: Causes rickets in Children.
Vitamin E - sources are egg, butter, wheat,
Function: for reproduction,
Vitamin K: vegetable,such as cabbage and spinnach.
Function: helps in blood clotting.
Deficiency: Excessive bleeding or haemorrhage.
