What is energy? Energy is the ability to perform work. It is the main spring of all life and of all the activities of mankind. Work is done when force causes an objectto more firmly distance.
Forms of Energy:
1) Mechanical energy which involves potential and kinetic.
2) Solar (light) (3) Chemical (Fuel and food). (4) Electrical, (5) Sound, (6) Heat (7) Nuclear(atomic) Energy.
Energy Requirement of Biological activities.
1. Energy is required for Mechanical work. This means that the contraction of muscle cells during locomotion and in beating of cilia and. Flagellum.
2. Energy is required in active transport. This is in form of kinetic energy body processes like diffusion and osmosis during the movement materials like digested food or waste products. This is done against their concentration gradient.
3. Heat Production: Energy transformation within the cell produces heat energy in muscles contraction in which chemical energy is changed to mechanical energy.
4. Heat Production: Energy transformation within the cell produces heat energy in muscles contraction in which chemical energy is changed to mechanical energy.
5. Metabolism eg. Anabolism- This is the building up processes such as protein, synthesis require energy in form of ATP and breaking down processes which is catabolism such as respiration also require energy.
