1. Macro nutrients or major elements are those nutrients required by the plant in larger quantity. Examples are Carbon, Hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron, sulphur and phosphorus.



2. Micro nutrients or minor elements are those nutrients required by plants in smaller quantity. Eg. Copper, boron, Molybdenum, Manganese and zinc.



These elements are required mainly for the formation of pigment and enzymes. The plant obtain carbon hydrogen and oxygen from the atmosphere. The rest of the element are absorbed in the formation of soluble mineral salt from the soil by the root system of the plant. Although nitrogen is abundant in the atmosphere. It cannot be used directly by the green plants.
