Enzymes are organic catalysts usually proteinous in nature which speeds up chemical reaction in living cells but are not used up in the process.



Characteristics of Enzymes.



1. They are proteinous in nature.

2. Enzymes have reversible reaction in substrate-Enzyme product.

3. Enzymes are specific in their action. Each enzyme catalyses one reaction.


4. Enzymes have a specific temperature range. Above or below which they become inactive.


5. Enzymes act in very small quantity and catalyses large amount of substrate.


6. Enzymes are affected by PH - ie the acidity or alkalinity of their surrounding. They are destroyed by strong acids or alkalis.
